MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Monday, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department tested out a new way to have you help them catch people walking the streets with outstanding warrants.

They’re using Facebook!

The Sheriff’s Department tailored all of the  warrant information to your neighborhood’s zip code.

The point they said is to have more eyes on the so-called bad guys.

They hoped it would help catch more of them with just a click.

Dustie Zvolanek said the new feature is key for neighborhood associations working to keep their streets safe.

“It’s definitely a community initiative. That’s what Memphis has been all about this year. Building a stronger community,” she explained.

The link takes you to a lot of information; including names, charges, last known address and date of birth.

But as of now, no pictures.

“I think it’s kind of a different spin on the sex offender registry. It’s the same thing, but for people who have warrants,” Zvolanek explained.

Chip Washington, a spokesman for the SCSO, said they’re building on an already working relationship with the public.

“We’ve used Facebook for a couple of years for identifying individuals with warrants,” Washington explained. “This is just another way of doing that and getting people involved in the process.”

Some people we spoke to said they weren’t sure how this would work out, but Tim Watson said it’s worth a shot, anyway.

“You don’t know what’s not going to work until you go out and try it,” Watson told WREG.
