MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell announced the county would officially be intensifying efforts to clean up roadside trash.
On Wednesday, the mayor announced more Shelby County Corrections Center inmate crews would be sent to the unincorporated areas near Millington, Woodstock, Northaven, South-East Shelby County, North-East Shelby County and Cordova.
“I hear every day from citizens about the appearance of our roads,” said Luttrell. ” We are taking a more strategic approach to litter, not only by doing weekly sweeps of problem areas but continually keeping the media and neighborhood associations apprised of our efforts each month.”
According to the release sent to WREG, crews will be out Monday through Friday with additional D.U.I offenders working on Saturday and Monday.
“We’re pleased to have 24 inmates out each weekday picking up trash. It saves the County money by using workers from the corrections center,” said Bill Gupton, the Director of the Shelby County Corrections Center.
Roadside trash costs the County more than $350,000 last year, said Luttrell and that number is expected to go up with the increase in workers.
However, he assured the community that the County has budgeted for the expense.
Luttrell also pointed out they are also intensifying efforts to identify those who litter.
Crews have been told to report any litterbugs, and cameras were installed across the County.
