SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell delivered the State of the County address at the Kiwanis Club of Memphis Wednesday.

He began by saying he believes “we live in one of the best counties in this nation,” then went on to say there is also “room for improvement in some key areas before we realize the true greatness of this community.”

Much of Luttrell’s speech focused on the importance of supporting the children of Shelby County, specifically by providing quality public education, which in turn bolsters economic development through training and sustaining a skilled workforce.

The mayor then acknowledged the importance of continued improvements to public health, noting the first decrease in the county’s infant mortality rates. He also praised the Mid-South Regional Greenprint’s contribution to promoting healthy lifestyles, and touched on the importance of Operation Safe Community’s mission to enhance public safety.

Luttrell added none of this “would be possible without the financial affairs of Shelby County Government being stabilized and in order.”

“Throughout my term as mayor, I am happy to say that my administration has been able to do just that,” he said. “Shelby County has an excellent bond rating with our fund balance at a desired level and our debt being reduced annually.”
