Shelby County Office of Preparedness ready for more winter weather

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Office of Preparedness released a statement Sunday afternoon after a Winter Storm Advisory was issued for Shelby County.

Director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness Dale Lane says “A combination of freezing rain, sleet and snow will begin about 7 o’clock this evening. Citizens need to be on the alert. Ice will likely be on the roads, especially bridges and overpasses.”

The National Weather Service says the WREG-TV viewing area is expected to get one to three inches of sleet.

Shelby County Public Works trucks began putting brine on roads in unincorporated areas just after 11a.m. Sunday morning.

Director of Shelby County Public Works Tom Needham says, “Our salt and sand trucks will be ready when the wintery mix moves into the area.”

With tonight’s temperatures hitting the low teens and Monday’s high will be in the mid-20s Director Lane says, “Citizens need to keep a close watch on people who live alone, especially the elderly and disabled. Our staff will be in close contact with the National Weather Service and our emergency services and public works coordinators throughout Shelby County.”

Besides the latest round of winter weather, the Office of Preparedness staff continues to monitor high water from the Loosahatchie River in the Arlington and Lakeland areas. Roads blocked by high water yesterday have reopened.
