(Memphis) On Monday, the white Suburban that Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson drives sat outside the school system office, with no sign of damage.
Last Wednesday around 7:30 p.m., his district-issued vehicle got the attention of a crook,outside the downtown YMCA.
It didn’t surprise Jarvis Childs, who says there is plenty of crime in the area.
“I feel like if they see a nice car they gonna break into it, if they think they got something. People come from the ghetto, they ain’t got nothing, they want what this person got,” said Childs.
What was in Hopson’s SUV may have given the crooks what they wanted.
The police report says they found an e-reader, two credit cards, a debit card, a wallet and, surprisingly, a key card that gives Hopson 24-hour access to Shelby County Schools.
That’s right, the crook had access to the Shelby County School’s central office.
The school system confirms that the key was immediately de-activated, but won’t tell us if the key opened any other buildings outside of administration.
“I don’t know him, but he should have probably thought about that before he left them in his car. You should not leave anything important in your car,” said Catherine Chapman, who lives in downtown Memphis.
Shelby County School officials say Superintendent Hopson has it written in his contract that he can use his district vehicle after hours.
They couldn’t tell us how the crook got inside, whether he broke the window or jimmied the lock.
All of that is in the detailed police report that was not available Monday.
Police are still investigating and no one has been arrested.
