Shelby County Sheriff and MPD Director react to Hattiesburg shooting

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. – After two police officers had been shot and killed in Mississippi, Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham sent the following statement:

“Our thoughts and Prayers go out to the Families of the two officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of Hattiesburg.”

“Their sacrifice, like all of the heroes who have gone before them, should never be forgotten. Their legacy of service before self-lives on in our hearts.”

“As we come together this week all across this great nation, our brothers and sisters in Law Enforcement stand in solidarity. Millions of contacts, each year made by our colleagues in service to their communities exemplify professionalism, integrity, and respect. Their service should never be taken for granted. In times of conflict and chaos, they stand for order. They rush in as others flee.”

“Where is the outrage from those they protect. Each law enforcement officer understands the risk we take! In memory of the fallen, we stand our duty steadfast in honor of them.”

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong seat the following statement:

“Unfortunately, we (MPD) can certainly relate to what our brothers and sisters in Hattiesburg are going through.”

“Our hearts and prayers go out to both the immediate families of those officers and the officers of Hattiesburg. To lose an officer in the line of duty is one of the most traumatic experiences that law enforcement officers can experience.”

These times are very challenging times for law enforcement officers everywhere but the officers of Hattiesburg, as well as the officers here in Memphis, will continue to protect and serve its citizens at all cost. It will take the community of Hattiesburg time to heal and during this healing, we will stand in solidarity with their officers and community”.

Four people were arrested, and two were charged with capital murder after the two Mississippi police officers were shot to death during a traffic stop.

Officers arrested the three Hattiesburg residents at different locations overnight. The fourth suspect was arrested Sunday morning. Police say all suspects’ arraignment could be as early as Monday morning.
