SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A Memphis man has been arrested in a homicide on Hacks Cross Road Friday morning, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.
Theodore Cohen, 29, is charged with Second Degree Murder.
On Friday, police said the victim, who was later identified as James Lane, 27, of DeSoto County, was discovered on the ground with severe lacerations to his neck. Lane was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition but later died at the hospital.
According to court documents, detectives spoke with a witness who said they saw a man wearing a physician-style lab and blue hospital scrubs run away from the scene and enter a grey Acura sedan and sped away from the scene. Additionally, the witness told detectives they saw the victim, Lane, covered in blood and collapsed on the ground.
Authorities said the grey Acura TLX was seen on a traffic camera near East Holmes Road and Forest Wind Drive in Collierville in the timeframe when the homicide happened. During their investigation, they discovered the vehicle belonged to Theodore Cohen, of Memphis.
Police saw man matching the description that was provided by the eyewitness and detained Cohen. While conducting a safety pat down, they found Cohen had a holster in the rear of his pants which had a combat-style knife in it. Additionally, he had another knife attached to the driver seatbelt.
Cohen was transported to GIB headquarters and refused to give a statement. Detectives discovered Cohen is currently on probation for an aggravated assault/ shooting that happened in January 2018.
