Sheriff Responds to Political Email Controversy

(Memphis) Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham kicks off his campaign for a second term by doing a little damage control.

He says changes are being made after a staff member used the sheriff’s email account to send out a campaign announcement.

Oldham’s campaign kick-off was held at the Balinese Ballroom on North Main Saturday afternoon.

The sheriff’s Public Information Officer sent out the email about the event on Thursday.

It was recalled within minutes and the employee apologized.

Sheriff Oldham says he is still gathering facts before determining if any disciplinary action will take place.

The sheriff does say employees will be reminded of county protocol to let them know something like this will not be tolerated.

“We have to keep political activity out of the workplace,” Oldham said. “We are going to make sure that the message resonates not only through our organization, but through the administration.”

Sheriff Oldham says reminders about the policy will also be handed out at department roll calls.
