MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shooting outside Central High School in Midtown sent one juvenile to a hospital Monday afternoon.

Police said they responded at 2:44 p.m. and found the male victim in a parking lot. He is in critical condition at Regional One Hospital.

A suspect was found nearby and taken into custody. Police are calling this a “targeted incident” between a suspect and victim who knew each other.

A school board member said the shooting happened on the football field parking lot. A student is in critical condition at a hospital due to injuries from the exit wound.

The suspect, who is believed to be a student, was caught near Bellevue Middle School, the board member said.

A woman who spoke with WREG going by the name “Lady Bugg”, lives near the school and said that she is still trying to rationalize what led to the shooting.

“It was a lot of concerns out here, a lot of concerns,” she said. “Children and parents rushing in to get their children.”

WREG spoke with a community activist who told WREG that prior to the shooting, he heard there were several fights.

With his insight, he said that he worries how the school will be affected going forward.

“A lot of this stirs from social media,” Casio Montez said. “A lot of this stirs from what happens in the community.

Montez said there needs to be measures put in place to stop or minimize the violence that could come in retaliation to this shooting.

“We live in a time now where we don’t know how to let things go,” Montez said. “People say, ‘Hey, that’s so and so. We want our lick back.’ And another child get hurt.”

No charges have been filed and police are investigating.

Towanna Murphy, District 7 representative on the Memphis Shelby County Schools board, sent a statement on the incident:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic school shooting that occurred earlier today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims. We strongly advocate for comprehensive legislation to address gun control and ensure the safety of our students.”
