Shopper Goes After Bold Jewelry Store Thieves

(Memphis) Memphis police are still looking for the hammer-weilding thieves who stole nearly a million dollars worth of Rolex watches from a jewelry store at the Wolfchase Mall Saturday night.

The smash-and-grab at Reeds Jewelers sent shoppers at the mall running for cover, but one man decided to go after the bad guys.

“I was shocked what was going on right there at the mall I couldn’t believe it was happening,” said Donald Bennett, who was sitting right outside Reeds Jewelers and watched as thieves used hammers to break glass cases and steal the watches inside.

He says the noise sent most people running for cover, but he stayed behind.

The 74-year-old says he ran after the robbers without even thinking, yelled for them to stop, and even picked up evidence they left behind.

He says one of them dropped a cell phone and watch inside the mall, and another a hammer outside the mall.

“I picked the hammer up with a towel and picked up the watch and took it to Reeds and  they were closed down so I found a security guard and gave the watch to the security guard and showed her where the cell phone was,” said Bennett.

Bennett is hoping what he found will help police find the people responsible.

“It just seemed like the right thing to do. It was kind seemed like foolishness after it was all over with,” said Bennett.

Police say a man cleaning the lot at a shopping plaza across from the mall also found a hammer, t-shirt, and glove that they believe are connected to the heist.

Three of the thieves were seen leaving the mall in a gray minivan and two others got into a red Sedan.
