Shot fired at woman in southeast Shelby County after she honks horn

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Authorities said they are searching for the person responsible for a road rage shooting in southeast Shelby County on Tuesday.

Tiffany Dyson said she was driving home along Stateline Road near Annandale just before 3 p.m. when the driver of a white, four-door BMW sedan turned onto Stateline and tried to merge into her lane.

“I almost hit him, so, normal reaction, I blow my horn,” said Dyson.

Dyson said the BMW then turned onto Annandale. When she followed a few moments later, she said the car was parked in the middle of the road blocking her way.

“They eventually kind of go to the left. When they go to the left, I try to go to the right to go around. They move back over in front of me and blocked me,” said Dyson.

Dyson said a woman in a black bonnet leaned out of one of the rear windows, flipped her off and started hurling obscenities. She said the woman then drew a gun.

“I’m thinking, ‘Is she just showing me the gun to scare me or is she really about to use it?’”

Dyson said the woman fired a single shot, which she swerved to avoid. The BMW then sped off.

It’s concerning to longtime resident Alger Bautista whose children have just begun driving.

“It’s gonna put me on, you know, on alert that they go around on their car and somebody want to chase them for nothing, for little things,” said Bautista.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office addressed the situation on their Facebook page on Wednesday, saying road rage shootings are a concern in the county.

“We would like to remind everyone to avoid road-rage situations,” authorities said. “Reckless drivers are already breaking traffic laws, so you can’t predict how they’ll respond after blowing your horn and following them. You can report the information you already have to law enforcement, but don’t put yourself into an increasingly dangerous situation.”
