MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was shot inside a library in North Memphis, according to police.

It happened at North Branch Library on Vollintine around 3:30 Thursday.

Police said two men were in the lobby when one of them pulled out a gun and shot the other.

Officers said they couldn’t find either of the men when they got to the scene.

Police finally found the victim at Methodist University Hospital. He went there on his own and is expected to be okay.

“I’m kind of scared,” said Monica Askew.

She rushed to the library. It’s where her uncle has worked for decades.

“I’m very worried, because I just came up here, and I see a crime scene, and I’m wondering if anything happened to him,” she told WREG.

She talked to officers and eventually found relief.

“A customer went haywire and started shooting,” said Askew. “He’s fine. Everybody in there is safe and sound.”

Police went door to door, canvassed the neighborhood and searched for the shooter for hours.

They didn’t have any luck.

“I have three little ones, and I’m scared for them to go outside,” said a mother who lives nearby.

She said her kids go to the library as well as dozens of other kids.

It’s a safe place for them to go after school.

“It’s very sad. The crime is very high out here. It’s sad your kids can’t be safe no more,” she said.

Neighbors said senior citizens also go to the library. It’s home to support groups too.

The shooter is still on the run as of Thursday night.

His description is pretty vague.

Officers say he likely left that neighborhood and could be anywhere.
