MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A basketball game almost turned deadly on Sunday.
Police said Jonquil McQuerter was playing ball with off-duty Sheriff’s Deputy Darius Jones on a court behind Hamilton High School.
Officers reported McQuerter got mad for some reason and yelled, “I got something for your police *expletive*.”
The man reportedly left but then returned to the basketball court with a gun and started shooting.
Two shots were fired, but neither of the bullets hit the deputy as he ran away.
People who live in the area said this is something that should never happen.
“I don’t want nobody to kill nobody,” Vivian Wright said. “Thou shall not kill and I feel sorry for the officer you know because they are supposed to be protecting us.”
McQuerter is charged with criminal attempted first degree murder.
