MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shots were fired on the campus of Christian Brothers University early Thursday morning.
Two campus police officers were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle on campus at the time.
The officers tried to stop the car, and ordered the driver to get out of the car in the Avery parking lot.
The CBU officer said the man was armed and refused to get out of the car.
A release from CBU stated the man who was, “irate and argumentative,” left and came back with a gun to the intersection of Avery and Oakdale.
“He continued to say get out of the car, stop the car, get on the ground, and lay down. He would not do it,” said witness Kelly Schwartz, who was in a home nearby.
A CBU officer told the man to drop the gun, “at which time the suspect pointed the gun at the officers.”
The CBU officers fired at the man who then sped off.
Memphis police took a man into custody in the 3400 block of Carnes after a vehicle matching the description from CBU was found.
WREG saw Memphis Police return to the complex with a woman later Thursday morning. She told WREG the suspect does not live in her apartment, but he is a friend. She said he came to her place with a wound to his head.
Neighbors saw police raid the second floor unit around 8:15 a.m.
The man, who has minor injuries, is being treated at the hospital.
According to CBU, “No injuries are reported at this time, and there was no property damage. The individual is not a CBU student. There is no ongoing threat to the CBU campus. CBU Campus Police and the MPD are cooperating on the ongoing investigation.”
CBU operates its own police department, which holds a special commission through the Memphis Police Department.
“All Campus Police Officers are graduates of the police academy and are compliant with all requirements of the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Furthermore, they are armed and empowered to make arrests. All Campus Security Officers are licensed by the State of Tennessee and attend in-service training but are not armed.”
The officers who shot at the suspect are relieved of duty pending the conclusion of the investigation, according to procedure.
