(CNN) Singer Sinead O’Connor has a message for Miley Cyrus: Stop stripping!

The Irish singer has written an open letter to the Disney star after her controversial performance at the MTV awards and the release of her latest music video. In the video for “Wrecking Ball”, Cyrus appears nude and suggestively licks a sledgehammer.

“Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely not in any way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent, O’Connor said in a message on her website.

In a Rolling Stone article, Cyrus compared her look to O’Connor’s style in her 1990 video for the song “Nothing Compares to You”.

O’Connor says she chose the shaved-head look in defiance of music executives who wanted a sexier appearance.

O’Connor says the music industry doesn’t care about Cyrus.

“They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think it’s what YOU wanted,” O’Connor said.

Cyrus responded to the singer by posted a pair of tweets online. One brought up O’Connor’s previous problems with mental illness. The other showed a picture of her tearing up a picture of the Pope in 1992.
