MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was killed in a single-car crash that sent her vehicle into a ditch on South Parkway early Monday morning.
According to police, the vehicle ran off the road in the 2000 block of South Parkway East around 3 a.m. and flipped several times. The woman became trapped inside, authorities said.
She was later pronounced dead on the scene.
The family identified the driver as Markita McGhee Smith. They said the mother of four was driving back from visiting her grandmother when a truck ran a stop sign. She swerved to miss the vehicle and lost control.
The driver, they said, left the scene. Police have not confirmed that account.
Smith’s uncle, sisters and several other family members and friends all came out to the scene Monday morning, trying to find out what happened.
Smith’s cousin said the 29-year-old would be missed by many, especially her children.
“She was pretty much there for anyone. Anything you needed she was there. … She didn’t care if she had her last dollar if you needed it she would give it to you. She didn’t deserve to go like this though.”
