MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Six young men accused of a riot in a BP gas station parking lot went before a judge at Juvenile Court Tuesday.

The judge continued the case until June 16 at 9:30 a.m.

This action was meant to give attorneys time to review evidence and prepare their cases.

WREG spoke with Rufus Winfrey and Phyllis Fleming on their way out of court.

They were the parents of one of the juveniles who remains incarcerated.

They said he had hopes of going home Tuesday.

“I think that’s awful,” Fleming said, in response to the case’s next court date.

Their son was charged with burglary from a vehicle, vandalism, aggravated riot and assault.

They were adamant their son was innocent.

The attack allegedly happened at a BP gas station near Poplar and Cleveland in April.

A mob of young people rushed a man walking a woman to her car.

“They don’t have no proof he was there, just word of mouth,” Winfrey said.

WREG and other news crews were told one of the attorneys objected to the media being there and so we were not allowed in the courtroom.

We might not have heard what went on inside, but outside Fleming told WREG she wants her son home soon.

“He’s been in there ever since April,” she said.

Juvenile Court confirmed the case’s status and said three of the six boys were still being detained.

There are also adults who have been charged for the attack, including Denizell Gladney, 19, Devin Hulbert, 19, Darion Milken, 19, and Joe Brittman,19.
