WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — A tragic interstate crash in West Memphis on, Arkansas killed a young child no older than three and a man on Thursday.
A pick-up truck smashed into a semi where you enter the construction zone on I-55 near the Martin Luther King exit.
Emergency crews had to cut a woman out of the pick-up.
She went to Regional Medical’s Trauma Center.
The semi-truck driver wasn’t hurt.
Troopers spent Thursday night notifying the family and working to figure out what exactly caused the crash.
Some drivers blamed all the road construction.
They said crashes continue to happen in and around the construction area where I-55 and I-40 meet.
“It’s just stop and go. Stop and go,” said driver Bill Maiden.
Six months ago, another crash killed two people and injured several more on I-40 just before the orange cones.
“You’re trying to merge over, and you’ve got people behind you. You don’t know if they are going to stop or not,” said Maiden.
“I think it is miserable,” said driver Brother Jones.
WREG called the state’s transportation department and contractors to find out when the project will be finished but never heard back.
The original plans said it would all be done this summer.
The West Memphis Fire Department couldn’t say how many crashes they responded to since construction started, but did say there hasn’t been any noticeable trends.
While investigators didn’t say whether construction played a role in Thursday’s deadly crash, drivers hoped crews were back up soon, so another tragedy doesn’t happen.
The lead investigator told WREG a preliminary report is being put together.
As of Thursday night, it was not finished.
