MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Labor Day is not all barbecues and cookouts. For some, it is just another “punch-the-clock” Monday.
Law enforcement, firefighters, restaurant workers and medical personnel are just some of those who have to labor on Labor Day.
Larry Crawford, a manager at Blues City Cafe, is serving barbecue instead of eating it Monday, but he said he does not mind. In fact, he said he is having a blast working on Labor Day.
“It’s kind of a joy to me, because people need somewhere to eat in case they don’t want to go home and barbecue or cook. So that brings them in. As you can see, we’ve been rolling since about 10:30.”
But not everyone’s Labor Day duties are as enjoyable.
Firefighters, law enforcement and others work straight through holidays to make sure everyone else stays safe.
“They made a commitment to ensure the safety of others,” Chip Washington with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said. “Often times when you do that it requires some type of sacrifice. Missing holidays, having to work certain shifts is all part of that.”
That is a sacrifice others, such as South Memphis resident Tina Moore, who did not have to work Monday, said they are grateful for.
“Fires can break out or anything with people barbecue grilling and everything,” she said.
As for Crawford’s Labor Day restaurant shift, he is choosing to look at it a little differently.
“It’s just a bigger barbecue,” he said, smiling. “And like I said, my family’s cooking, so when I’m off, I’ll be with them.”
To all those working, Moore said you will be on her mind.
“I’ll eat a piece of meat for you,” she laughed.
