GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — It’s not a secret, Germantown Police protect their borders.

You’ll often see their SUV’s as you hit the Memphis suburb.

However, residents are wondering why a Germantown officer chased an armed robber several miles down Poplar Pike Monday only to let him go at Collierville.

“The officer, if he had thought it through at all, he would have notified police and there would have been three or four police cars right at the city line to pursue the man,” said Mike Lenahan from Collierville.

It all started after a burglar broke into a home on Steeplegate, near Poplar Pike.

The victim told News Channel 3 he caught the crook walking out with his valuables, including the homeowner’s gun.

The burglar allegedly pointed the man’s gun at him before he jumped in a car and sped off.

The homeowner reportedly told this to 911, but somehow it didn’t get passed along to the officer.

He reportedly didn’t know about the gun, nor that it had been pointed at the homeowner.

He thought he was chasing an unarmed burglar.

They were going at very high speeds so the officer backed off at busy Houston Levee Road.

“It`s an incredible job they perform day in and day out. They have info as you said to make the decision  and make the right call,” said Patrick Lawton, the Germantown City Manager.

If the officer knew what really happened, city leaders said he would have got back up and kept chasing.

Residents said police need to figure out why the info didn’t make it to the officer.
