Some students expelled after White Station High School fight

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some of the students involved in a vicious fight at White Station High School have been expelled.

The others were suspended, and Shelby County Schools said the high school upped security Wednesday.

But some parents and students told  WREG the school could be doing more.

One mother, Melanie Jones, told WREG she does not blame the school for the fight, but she is not happy with how she found out about it.

She didn’t find out through the school; she found out via social media.

“They usually call when something major goes on, like if they catch somebody with a weapon. We didn’t get that call yesterday,” Jones said.

Jones’ son Clay said the school had resource officers, but they could use more.

“If there’s more security they won’t be too quick to fight and stuff,” he said.

Clay also said the school did nothing to address the fight with students Wednesday.

But, then again, he said fights weren’t very common there.

“I thought it was crazy. It really doesn’t happen here all the time,” he said.

SCS would not let WREG interview the administration at White Station today, but did say suspended students were required to see school counselors and behavioral specialists after returning to class.

White Station also had additional security officers at the school Wednesday.

Jones said she understood the school couldn’t control the actions of every student, but said they have to try to reach kids before they become violent.

“We would be lying to say kids won’t ever fight at school, but a mob of kids jumping on one kid… it could’ve ended much worse.”

Over the phone, City Councilman Jim Strickland, who was over District 5, told WREG there should be zero tolerance for violence in schools, and the students from the fight Tuesday should be arrested.
