MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One man is locked up and another man’s family is grieving after a shooting in North Memphis.
Police charged Montavious Jennings with murder and attempted murder. He’s accused of firing the shot that killed Frederick Richardson, an innocent bystander after a fight broke out.
Some people who live in the neighborhood who witnessed the brawl believe others should be held accountable too.
Sharing tears and hugs were all many on Decatur Street could do late Wednesday afternoon after 46-year-old Richardson was shot in the head. The well-known father was more than 1200 feet away from a fight that had broken out.
“He was at his own house, in his driveway, pulling the garbage can up out the street or whatever,” said his cousin Willy Gant.
A neighbor, who called 911 and did not want to be identified, said he saw the initial fight.
“Punches thrown and things like that so I went inside, and next thing I hear is a shooting,” he said.
The witness said he saw several women and a man involved and said he was surprised only one person was charged.
Jennings faces murder and attempted murder charges after police said he also fired several shots at two women and a teenage boy.
Investigators tracked Jennings’ car to a friend’s house, and they said those friends told officers where he was.
Initially police were looking for five suspects, but they said they do not plan to charge anyone else involved. However. at least one neighbor does not think the violence should be tolerated and hopes the other people involved are held accountable.
Victor Robinson said it’s not the people he’s worried about.
“If we could get the guns off the street. That’s what I’m concerned about more than anything,” he said.
Other neighbors said they plan to stay vigilant and, unfortunately, stay inside more.
