MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The 2016 Beale Street Music Festival lineup is announced with headliners like Meghan Trainor, Jason Derulo, Paul Simon and Neil Young set to take the stage.

The acts are big, but some are questioning whether the genres are diverse enough.

WREG’s Katie Rufener spoke with organizers and Memphians to see what they think of this year’s concerts.

There is no doubt the Beale Street Music Festival sparks a lot of excitement, and many anticipate the release of the lineup every year.

“It’s one of the things I always enjoy, that and Barbecue Fest,” Memphis resident Dylan Pope said.

This year’s headliners include 90s favorites and even the winner of this year’s Best New Artist Grammy.

“We’ve got Weezer. We’ve got Meghan Trainor, Jason Derulo, Modest Mouse,” Penelope Huston with Memphis in May said.

Memphian Clifton Macon said he is not impressed.

“It’s not that appealing to the new generation … Neil Young, Mouse Trap.”

The festival will feature everything from pop to rock to folk music. But some feel other genres like rap, hip hop and others are still underrepresented.

“I think it’s not diverse enough,” Macon said. “What happened to Beyonce, Jay Z, some major acts?”

“I wish they had more country artists come,” Pope added.

Still, organizers insist the festival will have something for everyone.

“We have Yo Gotti on the lineup, and I think everybody in Memphis is super behind him right now,” Huston said.

Some, like Memphis resident Wayne Currie, told WREG ticket prices are too high for many Memphians to attend.

“For a three-day pass, it’s too much.”

Huston said the cost is lower than many other music festivals.

“If you look at our prices compared to other prices, we’re half what other festivals are.”

Tickets are on sale now.

A three day pass will run you $105 this year. A one day pass is $45.
