South Memphis church feeds 400 homeless Memphians

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Church members at Riverside Missionary Baptist Church served home-cooked meals to nearly 400 homeless Memphians on Saturday.

The event made folks like Chris Shelby feel “like a winner, like an angel.”

Rev. Robert Harvey said he believes this weekend’s event is important because families in the area have needs all year long.

“All of us know there will be a million Thanksgiving meals, a million Christmas feasts. But in a random week in September, who is going to serve the population?” Harvey said.

“It’s more special,” Shelby said. “It’s a holiday every day, you can reach out and touch someone everyday.”

That’s why 17-year-old Nakesia Jones volunteered.

“Homeless people out on the streets, I hate seeing that, it hurts my heart,” Jones said. “I eat every day; I think everybody should be able to eat.”

Harvey said he hopes to host a similar event in the spring.
