(Southaven, MS) Several Southaven Alderman will head to Jackson, Mississippi May 13th to tell what they know about Mayor Greg Davis’ spending habits on the city dime.
At least one alderman wants to get out of the trip.
William Brooks filed a request to quash his subpoena.
He accused Mayor Davis of unreasonable and improper conduct, saying Davis set and canceled several depositions with him.
He says it is to inconvenience and embarrass alderman who are cooperating with the state’s investigation of Davis’ spending.
In court documents, Davis denies the claim saying Alderman Brooks has first hand knowledge of the events surrounding the lawsuit, including spending and travel.
He is a material witness to the case who needs to attend the trial in Jackson and take the stand.
This month’s hearing is a continuation of one that started a few months ago but never wrapped up.
Mississippi auditors say Greg Davis still owes the City of Southaven more than 70 thousand dollars he inappropriately spent.
Davis says he was acting within city law and doesn’t owe anything.
The testimony of the Board of Alderman, who signed off on the spending, may be crucial in determining who knew what and who allowed it to happen.
Sources say the distance of the trial, in Jackson, Mississippi, may be one reason aldermen are trying to get out of testifying.
So far we have not heard what the court has decided on Alderman Brooks request and
Mayor Davis’ counter request.
As of now, the trial will resume May 13th.
