SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The search for a man involved in a frightening police chase has some north Mississippi residents on edge.
Police are looking for Arthur Dunlap, 21, who is accused of ramming three police cars and assaulting an officer.
Southaven police chief Tom Long said it’s a good thing no one was hurt, but three cars received damage because of the incident.
Although it was only minor damage, people who live there know it could have been a lot worse.
“Real frustrating, it’s bad boys all over, don’t these idiots realize that they’re going to get caught, with all the technology,” a neighbor said.
This neighbor, who didn’t want to give us his name, was home during a police chase in his subdivision. He said he saw Arthur Dunlap on Cotton Lane.
“I saw a guy running that way; he hopped the fence and went somewhere I guess. I don’t know exactly where he went but he went,” he said.
Long said an officer stopped Dunlap on Wednesday night for driving without car tags.
The officer asked him to step out the car, but Dunlap refused. When the officer attempted to open the door and get Dunlap out of the vehicle, things took a twist.
“That time, the subject put the car in drive and accelerated off, pulled the officer briefly, but the officer let go before he was dragged under the car, dragged down the street,” the chief said.
The chase led officers to a dead end on Cotton Lane.
“They were able to box the car in, and he began to ram the units, but they were able to hold him. He bailed out and ran,” Long said.
“He’s just lucky the pit bull didn’t chew him up. I don’t know if he went in my yard or another yard, but apparently they fired tasers at him,” the neighbor said.
Dunlap has a criminal background and was recently released from prison. Long said he doesn’t know at this time what his charges were.
Police received a call from someone saying they spotted Dunlap take off running Thursday in the area west of Highway 51.
