Southaven to rethink sign ordinance

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The growing popularity of bigger-than-life video display boards is causing Southaven to rethink its sign ordinance.

According to reports,  Mayor Darren Musselwhite broached the topic with aldermen last week, getting their feel on potential changes to how the city regulates signs and billboards.

Musselwhite said he wanted input because of the increasing number of requests for large video boards from commercial developments, schools and other entities that like the eye-catching appeal of the TV-like displays.

The issue is becoming more pronounced in Southaven as growth accelerates.

Landers Center on Interstate 55 has a large video message board facing the interstate advertising upcoming events at the entertainment venue.

And, Musselwhite says the Tanger Factory Outlet Mall, expected to open in November, will want a similar board drawing traffic from the interstate.
