HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Less than a week after the Mississippi state flag was lowered from its flag pole on the Ole Miss campus, the University of Southern Mississippi has followed suit.

The university took down the flag Wednesday morning, a spokesperson from the President’s Office said.

But the controversial state flag isn’t the only one to stop flying on the campus. The school also took down the university flag, which depicts the school mascot, a golden eagle.

The President’s Office declined to comment on why that flag was removed as well.

Each flag will be replaced with the U.S. flag, according to the President’s Office. There was previously a U.S. flag flown along with the state and university flags; now three U.S. flags will fly.
