(Memphis) Stand for Children’s mission centers on educational issues.
So when there is something as crucial as a school board election, expect to see them front and center.
“Having effective leadership in those positions is essential. Those school board members will set the tone, not only in those districts they represent, but the entire school district, ” said Sondra Keys, director of Governmental Affairs with Stand for Children Tennessee.
Stand for Children supported Kevin Woods when he faced school board member Kenneth Whalum in District 4.
The organization took heat for donating big bucks.
That District 4 race is expected to be re-done after voting irregularities, and Stand for Children is gearing up once again.
“At this juncture, I anticipate we will endorse Commissioner Woods,” Keys said.
They won’t say the type of support they are providing.
Kenneth Whalum expects they will be throwing in big dollars, and not for him.
“I won’t have a lot of money. It will be interesting to see the amount Stand for Children spends this time, but we are gonna make them spend every dime,” said Whalum.
Kevin Woods is looking forward.
“At the end of the day the work is what speaks volumes when it comes to school board elections. So I think I have a huge advantage when it comes to the work that’s been done in the last two years,” says Woods.
Stand for Children sponsored a candidate’s forum for the school board’s District 6 seat.
The County Commission is expected to appoint someone to the vacancy, but Stand for Children wants to make sure the community knows the candidates and where they stand.
