MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Friday was a special last day of school for Sea Isle Elementary, which hosted its fifth grade graduation.
A serious medical issue kept one graduate from attending, so Sea Isle brought the ceremony to her.
Thanks to a Skype call, Jamiya Jamison got to graduate with her classmates, watching them cross the stage from her hospital bed.
She was due in surgery shortly thereafter.
“About two months ago, she’s developed some type of unknown GI infection, and so she’s been in and out of the hospital. Now she’s currently in the hospital having part of her colon removed,” said Jamison’s aunt, Angela Sargent.
Sargent, who also teaches at the school, said the past couple months have been draining.
Even though Friday was surgery day for Jamison, it was also a day filled with joy.
“She has not smiled in awhile. So, to see her happy and smiling and knowing that she’s loved has done a lot for her spirits,” Sargent said.
Sea Isle recognized Jamison with a certificate and several shout-outs during the ceremony.
“She’s in our strings class too. So, we’re dedicating all our music to you, Jamiya! We love you!” one teacher said during a music performance.
Late Friday afternoon, Jamison’s family told WREG she came out of surgery, and doctors think everything went well.
Jamison is hoping to feel well enough to go on a cruise this summer.
