MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Security guards were on the job Monday night, watching over two dorms next to the Memphis College of Art.
A man was caught on camera slipping through the gate after a car drove through in the middle of the night Sunday.
Trey Porter lives next door to where the man was seen going door to door jiggling handles until he found one that opened.
A 19-year-old woman said she woke up with the man on top of her in her bed with a knife to her neck.
The student screamed and fought him off, and he ran out. Police said he was running into other students who were trying to figure out what was going on.
Students told WREG that as soon as they saw the man, they knew who he was.
“He walked past here a lot, a lot of students say he walked back and forth between these two buildings and the school,” freshman Cambria Howard said.
Other students said he has to live somewhere in the neighborhood.
A school spokeswoman said the suite the man found was unlocked, but another freshman, Trey Porter, said his dorm door locks automatically.
“There’s no way you can get in without this keycard. Even if you close your door, it can automatically lock,” Porter said.
If not all the doors lock, some parents and students want to know why.
“I was really shocked,” Howard said. “We’re in a gated community, so I expected it to be high security.”
