MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was burned, a man hurt his legs, and two firefighters were taken to the hospital after doing their job in 95 degree heat.
All of these injuries were the result of a massive fire at the Warren Apartments Thursday afternoon
Everyone was pitching in to help including more than 50 volunteers from a Baptist Church in Oklahoma.
“We were back there playing with kids, had a water slide, and looked up and saw smoke,” said one of the volunteers.
They were here painting, cleaning and holding classes for kids during the summer, when suddenly their new mission was to make sure everyone got out alive.
“I know everyone got out. We just prayed everyone got out safe,” one of the church members told WREG.
The apartments are owned by the same company that owns Goodwill Village, a complex recently under fire for poor maintenance despite federal subsidies.
So far, investigators have not released the cause of the fire, but several people said there were electrical problems in the building.
The main focus tonight was where they’ll be sleeping.
