Students calling for more security after local dorm room attack

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Arts students were rattled after a girl was attacked in her own dorm room September 6.

And it was all caught on camera.

Police said the man seen in surveillance video snuck into the gated complex behind a car and went around jiggling door handles at Fogelman Hall until one opened.

A student woke up with the man over top of her and a knife to her throat.

The victim told police she screamed, and that is when the man ran away.

Students said the rooms at Fogelman do not automatically lock like the ones at Metz Hall, and they wanted to the school to update it’s security.

“It might help, because some people forget to lock it,” student Kayla Caron said.

WREG tried to sit down with the college, but for the second day in a row, the school refused.

Instead, it sent a statement listing some of the safety measures, including gates, campus security patrols and text alerts it has in place.

So far, no arrests have been made.
