MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It’s been sixty years since Elvis Presley recorded his first single ‘That’s All Right Mamma’ at Sun Studio in Memphis.
Saturday, the legendary studio marked the anniversary in a big way with free tours and souvenirs.
As you can imagine, there were large crowds on hand for the event.
Sun Studio also celebrated with the grand opening of an exhibit focused on DJ Dewey Phillips.
The exhibit consists of the original workspace from which Phillips broadcasted his famed ‘Red Hot and Blue’ radio show.
Phillips broadcasted from a booth in the Hotel Chisca located in downtown Memphis from 1953-1959.
On July 8, 1954 Elvis’s ‘That’s All Right Mamma’ was played on the radio for the first time by Phillips, and the rest, as they say, is history.
People who toured Sun Studio today got to take home a commemorative 45 vinyl record of Chris Isaak performing his version of the song.
