MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For the third year in a row, Memphis Light, Gas & Water topped the list of cities with the lowest winter utility bills.
The survey looked at what a typical family used in terms of electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services and compared that to thirty other metropolitan areas.
According to the results, the average person in Memphis paid $251.06 a month compared to a person in Boston who paid $603.23.
Jackson, Tennessee came in 12 on the list followed by Chattanooga, Nashville and Knoxville.
The survey also suggested that the price Memphians paid for the services is going down as well.
In 2014, residents paid Memphis Light, Gas & Water $278.25 a month.
That dropped almost $30 to $251.06.
Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said the city should be very proud of the results, and they should be used to our advantage.
“We pay too much attention to what kind of tax incentives that we should give to recruit businesses and industry here. I think, perhaps, we ought to downplay that and play up that there is a distinct advantage that is perpetual,” he said.
“These tax incentives run out after, seven, eight, ten years. The cost for competitive, low utility prices is something that never, ever, ever, runs out. It is a distinct competitive advantage which we have to do a better job of marketing,” he added.
