MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police have arrested a man for the murder of a woman on Mud Island.
Kurtrell Williams was arrested in connection with the murder of Susan Grissom, who was found dead in her Harbor Town home on Island Drive on the night of Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Police obtained surveillance footage and a photo of a man using Grissom’s credit card and shared it with the public Friday.
A flood of Crime Stoppers tips led to police positively identifying Williams as the suspect.
Police located Williams Friday night at a home on Brighton Road and arrested him without incident.
“It was a surprise to think we were coming home and they had crime scene tape up, We had to go down Jackson and cut up the side street, come in the back way,” said Mary McNeil, who lives in Raleigh just feet from where police made the arrest.
Neighbors like McNeil wondered what was going on but had know idea all of the commotion was connected to the murder of Susan Grissom that happened across town.
Williams later confessed to the murder of Grissom and taking her money and credit card.
Williams told police he then drove to the Exxon on Third and Crump to use the credit card to get cash. Records show he attempted to use the card a half hour before Grissom’s husband found her dead.
Police searched Williams home and car and found the clothing he told investigators he wore when he murdered Grissom.
Williams has been charged with First Degree Murder, First Degree Murder in Perpetration of Robbery, First Degree Murder in Perpetration of Burglary, Aggravated Robbery and Especially Aggravated Robbery.
“It’s kind of scary to think he made it this far before they got him I’m just glad they got him,” said McNeil.
In September Williams faced charges related to car burglary and theft. In May he was charged with aggravated assault for choking his girlfriend during a fight.
Residents in both Raleigh and Harbor Town hope the streak of violence will stop now that he’s off the streets and facing first degree murder charges.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends,” added McNeil.
