MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A spokesperson with the TBI updated the media on the latest information from their investigation into officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials, two Memphis Police officers were involved in the incident along with an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who happened to be in the area.

Initial reports indicate the officers were trying to conduct a routine traffic stop when the chase began.

Eventually the officers called off the chase for safety reasons but continued to keep an eye on them.

That’s when the suspects crashed into two cars.

When the car came to a stop, that’s when the suspects jumped out of the car and began to flee on foot.

Officers took off after them.

It was during that chase that one of the suspects opened fire on police, and both officers shot back.

The TBI believes only one of the suspects had a gun, and he was the one who was shot and killed.

That suspect later died on the scene.

The second suspect is still at large at this time.

The TBI is now officially the lead agency investigating this case.

As in all officer-involved shootings, the TBI will turn over their findings to the District Attorney’s Office once it is done.

More than a  dozen TBI agents are on the scene, including forensic scientists.
