Teacher reacts to teen’s murder at LA Fitness

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Memphis Police told WREG they were still searching for two men wanted for gunning down a teen at a popular fitness gym off Winchester near Bill Morris Parkway.

“I’m still just lost. It hasn’t hit me that a student lost his life to a game of basketball,” said Kirby High School teacher David Burnett.

Burnett didn’t sleep well Friday night.

He got a call from one of his students that a former student, Vicdarrius Pollard, was gunned down while inside LA Fitness.

Police said two men, upset over a basketball game at the gym, went out to the parking lot, grabbed a gun and then went back inside and opened fire.

The shooters then took off.

“You get a gym membership so your kid can have that recreational time to not be involved with people who are no good. Something like this happens at a place you thought would have been safe for your child,” said Burnett.

Pollard just graduated from Kirby High just a couple months ago.

He was a member of Kirby’s championship bowling team and was getting ready to start college next month.

“He was a leader amongst all of his friends. He guided them even when they wanted to skip class and things like that. He was the one who was like, ‘get it together,” said Burnett.

Now instead of preparing to send Pollard to Lane College, his mother is forced to plan his funeral.

“She is just- I don’t even know how to explain. They haven`t let her see the body,” said Burnett.
