MEMPHIS, TENN. — After five years, Keith Williams has announced he will no longer serve as the president of the Memphis Shelby County Education Association.

WREG confirmed with MSCEA Executive Director Ken Foster that Williams left office because his term limit expired.

Foster said Williams served two two-year terms, plus an extra year, to smooth the transition of the Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools merger.

He began in 2010.

“Keith came along at a time when it was imperative to have a good leader for this organization,” Foster said.

Williams did not respond to request for comment because he was out of town at a national teacher’s conference.

Foster said the public could always find Williams at school board meetings advocating for teachers.

This spring, he worked to iron out a memorandum of understanding between teachers and Shelby County Schools, spelling out policies for things such as grievances.

“He’s going to continue assisting the president in whatever she needs help with,” Foster said.

That will likely include the fight over more than 500 teaching and administrative positions getting cut this year.

Patricia Scarborough from Colonial Middle School was recently elected the president.

County records showed Williams filed to run for City Council.
