MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Just as soon as Memphis manages its Mississippi River flooding problem, there is another major change coming to the Mid-South.

A big chill is expected to make its way here this weekend.

“The temperatures are going to go from way above normal, and as we head into Saturday evening, the cold front arrives, and the numbers are going to start to drop,” said WREG Meteorologist Austen Onek.

WREG’s weather team is closely monitoring the expected dive from the 50’s and 60’s to the 30’s this weekend.

There is even a slight chance for some kind of wintry precipitation.

“Maybe some minor accumulations on grassy areas but nothing big,” Onek said.

Some people gave the news of the cold a warm reception.

“I’m from the northeast. So, it’s winter time, we need some cold weather. That’s how I feel,” said John Hilbert, out enjoying the weather Friday.

“Only thing you can do is be prepared for it. We live in a region that things are subject to change any time, you know,” said Memphis resident Eugene Pratcher.

Memphis’ Public Works Division is monitoring conditions, though the threat of frozen roads is unlikely at this point.

“Ground temperature is really warm right now and it takes a lot of energy, a lot of cold temperatures to really get down to that frost level to cause some freezing conditions,” said Public Works Director Robert Knecht.

Onek agreed, saying that the biggest threat for drivers might just be the wet roads because of Saturday’s expected rainfall.
