NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Hoverboards, or self-balancing scooters, are one of the hottest gifts of the season. But now, the state fire marshal is urging shoppers to do some research before buying them.

Citing the growing worldwide number of injuries and fires involved with the devices, the Tennessee fire marshal is offering a few tips:

  • Make sure the hoverboard is compliant with federal standards and inspections. There should be a mark on the packaging, the device or the charging equipment.
  • Purchase a device with a warranty.
  • Buy it in person at a store or from a reputable online source, and check with the retailer about the safety of the device.
  • Let the hoverboard cool off after use before charging it.
  • Don’t leave it unattended while charging and don’t overcharge it.
  • Don’t use imitation electrical chargers.
  • Only use one plug per socket.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment when riding.
  • Don’t use a cellphone when operating the hoverboard.
  • If the device becomes hot while in use, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or retailer.
