Comparing The Cost Of Family Fun At The New Kroc Center To Other Facilities

(Memphis) People are lining up for membership at the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center before it’s even open.

“I wanted to be a part of something that was really great and big in Memphis,” says
Michelle McKissack, who  is getting a family membership for herself and her brother.

“I paid $660 for an annual membership for two of those. It was a good deal though because I have four children. My brother and his wife have 4 children. So we will be spending a lot of time here at the pool,” says McKissack.

As a member, she can use the Aquatic Center, the Fitness Center and the in-and-out-door sports areas.

For a family of four, membership is  $600, $360 for individuals, plus a $50 registration fee.

Some say the Kroc Center will give places like the YMCA competition.

At the “Y,” a  family membership runs $900, $600 for individuals.

The YMCA however has multiple locations, lower rates based on income and you don’t have to enter a contract.

Both facilities offer programs for children including swimming and after care.

“We have set it at a rate that we need to set it at to pay the bills. So it’s not so much to compete with others. We have a large operating endowment that was provided by the Kroc Trust and also funds that were raised here in the community. So we were able to keep our membership costs low,” says Captain Jonathan Rich, Area Commander of the Memphis Salvation Army.

A one day pass at the Kroc Center costs $5 to 10 which is comparable to a YMCA.

Concerts and plays will be featured in the theater, which rents for $250 an hour.

The largest room, Hardin Grand Hall, costs $450 an hour.

With amenities like two hours of free child care, a Kroc Cafe and a problem solving challenge lab, many  think it’s worth it.

“I think it’s a great price for what you get. This is a fantastic facility,” says Tom Leitzell, who signed up for a family membership.
