MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Salvation Army is offering help after seeing this disturbing video of a man and a woman unconscious on a sidewalk.
Police said they were overdosing from heroin.
In the video, you see people take pictures, some laugh, and one man even streamed it all live on Facebook.
It happened Monday at the corner of Pauline and Eastmoreland in the Medical District.
The Salvation Army said the video is anything but funny and is offering their treatment service to the couple and anyone else who needs it.
“It was horrifying. People have been impacted by seeing it. We just can’t leave it there without saying there is hope,” said Sharon Cash, who runs the Renewal Place Program, one of many free treatment options at the Salvation Army.
“We are the largest provider of free treatment there is in the city,” she said.
The Salvation Army offers outpatient services, work therapy and even a residential program for women and their children.
After the detox at another location, they help you recover and get to the core of the problem.
“Was it for social? Was it for comfort? Going back and peel away those layers,” said Cash.
Cash said this video should be a reminder to all: We must intervene and help those battling addiction.
“The best way to help them is to say you need to go to treatment. You cannot come back here. I don’t want to see you die,” said Cash.
The woman in the video was taken to jail on outstanding warrants.
Police say the man wasn’t charged.
No word where they are, but the Salvation Army wants them to know: They’re willing to help.
