MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said thieves targeted a number of Uptown homes on Keel Avenue, not far from North Second Street over the weekend.
And now — just hours later — almost every homeowner we spoke with said they heard about the break-ins.
One man WREG spoke to was too afraid to show his face on camera because of fear of retaliation but said he witnessed people breaking into his neighbor’s home Friday night.
“It was at like midnight, and they were wearing all black so that was enough for me to think she might be getting broken into,” he said.
Now seeing the boarded-up home made some homeowners worry they could be the next target.
“We just sort of feel like, well, it’s going to be our turn eventually, and that’s not what we like,” the neighbor said. “That’s not what we want this neighborhood to be about.”
Police said it was possible at least two teens were connected with the break-ins.
They said one of the teens accused of breaking into a home Saturday night fit the description of the same person who may have broken into homes in the area.
Daniel Bond, who lives in the neighborhood, said he hopes whoever is responsible learns from this.
“They will eventually pay for what they’ve done,” he said. “People having to deal with that, it is very frustrating.”
Even while our crews were in the neighborhood, we came across several Memphis Police officers in the area who warned neighbors about the break-ins and told them to pay close attention to their surroundings.
