Thousands go online on second day of Shelby County Schools registration

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tuesday marked day two of online registration for Shelby County Schools, and thousands of parents took advantage.

As of midday Tuesday, more than 13,000 registrations had been completed.

When WREG spoke with SCS Director of Attendance and Discipline Angela Hargrave, she was still reeling from the turnout on day one.

More than 10,000 students finished registering online for school this fall on the first day.

“That’s huge for us. That’s over 10 percent of our total population, so, much more than we expected,” Hargrave said.

SCS hosted a kickoff event Monday to launch the district’s brand new online registration system.

The district said the point was for parents to get “online,” not “in line” at their kids’ schools like they have in previous years.

Phones were still lighting up at the district on day two of registration.

There were still questions about SNAPCODES, which were what parents entered to start registering their child.

The district sent out notes via mail and email, including instructions such as, “When you register, make sure you enter your SNAPCODE exactly as it appears above, with no spaces or punctuation.”

Still, many parents said they never received those SNAPCODES.

Hargrave believed many of those notifications arrived but might have been overlooked.

She explained that some parents told her they had not checked their mailbox for the letter but found it when they did.

“We also had some emails that just have gotten placed in another folder,” Hargrave said.

The families WREG met at the district’s Northeast Regional Office said they came there to track down their SNAPCODES.

Students’ reactions to the new system varied.

“We had to, like, fill out a lot of documents. It was long,” seventh grader Karla Valeriano said.

“I think it’s faster,” sixth grader Alfredo Gasca said.

The district said more than 25,000 registrations have been started online.

Schools open next week to help out and registration runs through August 4.

The district said people may visit the following locations for SNAPCODE assistance:
