MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A reported sex offender is in trouble with the law after allegedly refusing to cooperate with U.S. Marshals.
According to authorities, agents were sent to a home in the 4800 block of Quince to detain James Johnson, a registered sex offender from New York. Johnson reportedly just moved to the Bluff City, but failed to register with state and local authorities.
Johnson’s mother says he was off parole and didn’t know he had to join the registry.
“I’m glad someone blew the whistle on him and got things taken care of,” neighbor Roderick Pigues said.
When authorities arrived at the home they were met by his sisters.
Johnson resisted, WREG was told.
Johnson was convicted of rape and sodomy of a 12-year-old back in 2002. He served 10 years in prison and finished his probation last June.
That’s when he packed up to Memphis to join his family.
He’s listed as a level two sexually violent offender on the registry, and many people we ran into told us they’d like to know if he moved in next door.
“I’m glad they caught up with him. He’s where he needs to be,” a neighbor said.
