MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Councilwoman Janis Fullilove may lose her home for not paying county property taxes for the past several years.

WREG discovered she’s not the only council member behind on their taxes. In fact, about a third of the council is either late or was late paying taxes this year.

For some of them, this wasn’t their first time not paying the bills.

WREG discovered Fullilove hasn’t paid her county taxes for the past three years.

Now, her home is scheduled for a tax sale in June.

No one answered the door when WREG stopped by her home.

She only answered our text message saying she didn’t have time to talk.

Some of her constituents weren’t happy to hear she’s behind, and that she’s been late paying her city taxes for several years.

“Everybody should pay their taxes, especially if you running for any kind of city government,” said taxpayer Kim Calvin.

Councilman Martavius Jones owes $700 in county taxes.

He promised to pay everything off by next week and told WREG it’s an oversight, but we found he’s paid his city taxes late nine of the last ten years.

Councilman Reid Hegdepeth and Joe Brown were also late paying, but got caught up Wednesday.

Jones and Brown have been late paying city taxes before too.

As for Fullilove, she’s got until June 22 to either work out a payment plan or get caught up to speed to keep her home.
