WASHINGTON — Conditions at one local apartment complex is getting the attention of lawmakers in Washington.

Congressman Steve Cohen announced on Wednesday a letter has been sent to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)  Julian Castro on living conditions at Peppertree Apartments.

“I am concerned about recent reports regarding safety and security problems at the Peppertree Apartments, a federally subsidized complex in Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “According to media reports, Memphis Police were called 1,200 times to the complex last year. Tenants have also complained of rodents, as well as bedbugs and broken appliances. If these reports are accurate, this is deeply disturbing.”

In the letter, Cohen said tenants deserve “clean, safe, and fully functional housing.”

The announcement comes just hours after community members and tenants demanded the complex shut down.

WREG reported nearly 300 arrests were made for charges ranging from assault to drugs to murder.

Plus, code enforcement said the place is plagued with violations
