SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Someone sprayed the message “white lives matter” on the tombstone of Queen Haley, the paternal grandmother of Roots author Alex Haley.
The vandalism occurred just one day after a family reunion, WBBJ reported.
“If hate is inside of you, hate will do nothing but eat you up,” Greg Cherry, another descendant of Queen Haley, told WBBJ. “I’m hurt someone would think only one life matters when we all matter.”
Savannah Police Chief Gary Will Jr. echoed this sentiment in a statement.
Police said catching the culprit will be difficult because there are no cameras in the cemetery.
In recent weeks, numerous Confederate monuments have been vandalized around the country with the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ sprayed on them.
A cleaning company has been hired to remove the paint, according to a Facebook post by the Savannah Police Department.
The company will also add a protective coating to prevent any possible future vandalism.
Queen Haley faced many difficulties in her life because she was biracial and grew up a slave, the daughter of a female slave and a slave master.
Alex Haley based his novel Queen: The Story of an American Family, which was later turned into a miniseries, on her life.
