(Memphis) Twenty five Yoshino Cherry and Oak trees along the Memphis Mississippi River bluff are now gone after the city of Memphis cut them down.
“The trees were taken down I cannot lie because they did not fit in with the placement there on the bluff,” said City of Memphis Chief Administrative Officer George Little.
“The bluff as I understand it is a very sandy kind of soil. So with the root structure of the trees that were there, ultimately it was going to be hard to maintain those with erosion,” said Little.
The trees were cut down over the weekend.
While the city does not plan on cutting down any more trees, they will be replacing the ones that were cut down over the next year.
As study commissioned by the Riverfront Development Corporation said the 25 trees were dead, diseased or over grown for the location where they were planted.
